The Grace Presbyterian Church Global Missions Team and Boy Scout Troop 250 are co-sponsoring a food packing service project on Monday, October 8th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the church. You and your family can help package food that can be distributed to relieve hunger across the globe.
Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief agency that has been fulfilling its commitment to end hunger for more than 13 years. Since 1998, the organization has coordinated the distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world. Stop Hunger Now launched its meal packaging program in 2005. The program perfected the assembly process that combines rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix including 21 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packets. Each meal costs only 25 cents. The food stores easily, has a shelf-life of five years and transports quickly. Stop Hunger Now works with international partners that ship and distribute the meals in-country. Stop Hunger Now’s meals primarily support school lunch programs. Due to the ease of assembly and transport, meals can be shipped to areas in crisis. This process for distribution, through school feeding programs in hunger-stricken regions, is seen as a practical means to end hunger.
There are jobs for everyone (ages 5 and up) like measuring ingredients and filling bags, being a runner to keep the product moving, weighing and sealing bags, and a bit of heavy lifting. Volunteers are also needed before and after the event for setup and tear down/cleanup. Even though this event will take the place of a regular scout meeting, we still need an accurate count of people wanting to help. Please contact Paul Smith at paul_smith@comporium.net or 803-547-2367 to volunteer.
Each meal costs 25 cents and our target is 12,000 meals. This packing event is being subsidized by the troop, the pack and Grace’s global missions team through proceeds from their Fifth Sunday Lunch on September 30th. The church is accepting additional contributions. These can be made to: Grace Presbyterian Church, Global Missions/Hunger Project, PO Box 3454, Fort Mill, SC 29708.
