PUMPKIN UNLOADING AT GRACE
DATE: Sunday, 10/8 pending confirmation later in the week
START: Noon
FINISH: when done
WHAT: Grace’s annual shipment of pumpkins for our pumpkin patch are scheduled to arrive for unloading at noon on Sunday, 10/8. It is an exercise in teamwork, as we typically organize two fire-brigade lines passing pumpkins out of the truck. It is a full trailer-load, so many hands are helpful.
WHY: Grace Youth Group (gYg) uses the proceeds from the patch for their mission funds which typically include: sponsoring expenses for youth from Thornwell Home for Children (Clinton, SC) to accompany gYg on a fall retreat weekend at a youth event near Asheville, various engagement locally with ROC, FM Care Center, etc., and a summer mission week. Much like we do with popcorn, a small percentage can also be earned to help cover their activity fees by participating during the sale. As an additional layer of mission, the pumpkins originate from a farm on a Navajo reservation in New Mexico, giving an important economic boost to the Navajo workers
HEALTH/SAFETY: Church building will be open for water/restroom access, but recommended you bring a water bottle of some sort to refill. Some are surprised to find the “smooth” pumpkins can actually be a little scratchy/prickly on bare arms, so many feel a long-sleeve shirt is the best practice. Bring your own gloves. When loading, they cushion the pumpkins with loose hay so if you have problems with grass allergies, take your meds or make yourself available for line positions outside the trailer only. Your COR Ray Scott (803-370-1613) and (usually) Pastor Joanne will be on-site, in addition to many other Grace people (youth and adults)
SIGN IN: Mr. Scott will make a sign-in sheet available
UPDATES: the last 3 or so shipments have been on schedule, but in occasionally there has been a need for rescheduling due to an issue at the farm loading or with the truck in-transit. Best practice: STAY TUNED TO THE GRACE FACEBOOK PAGE FOR UPDATES
