On Saturday, January 28th, the Palmetto Council presented the Silver Beaver Award (the highest council-level recognition) upon 250’s very own Bob Ormseth at the annual Council Banquet in Spartanburg.

This is a pretty big deal. Only about 4 of these are presented each year in the council and you have to have been a registered volunteer for at least 10 years AND successfully served in a key leadership position at the council-level. I believe Bob is only the 3rd scouter from 250 to receive the Silver Beaver. Not only did we surprise him at the ceremony, we got him again with a surprise reception at Grace afterward. Below is the citation that was read Saturday.
At the unit level, this recipient has held 9 various positions including Den Leader, Troop Committee Member, and Venturing Associate Advisor.
Service to the District has included Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner, Membership Chair, Family Friends of Scouting Chair, Training Chair, and District Commissioner.
In addition to 4 Training Awards, our recipient has earned numerous other awards, including 3 Commissioner Awards, finishing a Doctor of Commissioner Science with a thesis entitled “First Class in the First Year – The Webelos Connection”. In 2003, was recognized as York’s Cub Scouter of the Year, and in 2007 with the District Award-of-Merit.
On the Executive Board since 2005, this recipient gave significant leadership as the Council Training Chair, greatly extending training opportunities during a time of great growth in the Council. This person has served with distinction on multiple staffs. When he stands before a group to lead any type of training session, the man comes alive, capturing the attention of his audience. Many people look to him for answers, and if he didn’t know the answer he would find it.
He was on staff at the 2007 World Jamboree in England. He is well known for sharing his national and world scouting experiences to help broaden others’ understanding of the worldwide scouting movement.
For the 2010 National Jamboree, he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster. He added to the success of the event by providing leadership to the Emergency Preparedness award, took charge of training Chaplin’s aids in proper non-denomination services, as well as ensuring scouts attended a worship service at the Jamboree.
Beyond scouting, he has served as Secretary, Treasurer, Vice-President, and then President of the South Carolina Chapter of the National School Public Relations Association where he was a 4-time Golden Achievement Award winner, as well as receiving the Award of Excellence eleven times.
An active member at Lake Wylie Lutheran Church, he has served as Church Council President, Sunday School Teacher, as well as Counselor for all 4 Religious Award programs.
He and his wife Cindy have two children, Alex is an Eagle Scout and Danielle has the Venturing Silver Award.
